For years I have been wanting to bake our own bread – I LOVE when we get a loaf of bread from someone, or when someone hands me a sandwich with HOMEMADE bread. It is so good. So, a few weeks ago I finally decided to dive in and try to make some bread on my own. I have tried a handful of recipes, to some degree of success, but I finally found one that was worthy of sharing. It came from a cookbook that some friends compiled several years ago of their favorite recipes. This one is a winner! It has a great texture, and (in my opinion) the perfect touch of sweetness from the honey.
Honey Wheat Bread
(makes 2 loaves)
- 2-1/2 c. water
- 2-1/2 T. yeast
- 3/4 c. honey
- 1 T. salt
- 3 c. wheat flour
- 1/2 c. vegetable oil
- White flour
1. Put all ingredients into bowl in the order listed, except for the white flour. Stir.
2. Add white flour and knead until stiff. I added the flour in 1/2 cup increments until the dough was a good consistency – it ended up being somewhere between 4 and 4-1/2 cups of white flour total.
3. Roll into loaves and put into two greased bread pans. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
4. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. In my oven, 34 minutes seemed to be perfect.
There you go! Happy baking!
